Single Parent Holiday with Kid(s)

- By Poornima Poojary, 16th of August 2014, Family Travel, Views: 1607

Seems Nightmarish! But maybe you never realized that it is more important to bond with the little one who has lost out on many moments of togetherness with you while you were busy making ends meet.

It's time to make time & make the bond sublime! Go out together! Maybe a video game or a picnic once a week or a dinner, a play-zone or a holiday!

If your child is aged anywhere between 4 and 14, participate, participate, participate! Be it a fishing holiday, a visit to the planetarium, a swim, sightseeing, boating, campfire dance...no matter what...just be there, whole - physically & mentally! Your kid must look up to you as an ideal idol (for all good reasons that is).

For single parents with kids aged below 4, it is wise to be there whenever they need you. Evening outings to the park, mall, or short trips to the outskirts of the city are good ideas.

Checklist of things to carry when on holiday with your kid:

  • Enough baby food (for infants)
  • Health drink & food & like cornflakes, energy bar, brown bread, peanut butter, cup noodles, yogurt (for short trip since they turn sour if left in room temperature for too long)
  • Extra set of feeding bottle
  • Enough compact diapers which occupy less space
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Prickly Heat Powder
  • Talc
  • A flask of hot water
  • Small packets of biscuits and cornflakes. Very handy since the kids finish them off quickly and it eliminates the chances of reaching for your bag and dumping the leftovers back in a messy manner
  • Cups, plates, spoon, tissue paper
  • A small bunch of newspaper, just in case
  • Wet Wipes
  • Disposable bags for trash
  • A waist pouch is a good idea to keep all your important stuff such as money, passport, chocolates so that you don't need to reach out to your bag at all times
First Aid Box

What should your First aid box contain?

  • Cotton
  • Band-aid
  • Bandage
  • Ear Buds
  • Safety Pins
  • Antiseptic Disinfectant (Dettol, Savlon, etc)
  • Ointment for minor burns
  • Skin cream
  • Vaseline
  • Antiseptic cream
  • Scissors
  • Razor blade
  • A clean cotton cloth
  • A spray or balm for joint pains, sprain, etc
  • Tablets or syrup for gastric problems, stomach upset, headache
  • Syrup for Cough & Cold

Most importantly, LISTEN to your kid! This is a major mistake that we parents do. We do not listen and take the kids for granted. Maybe something is hurting them below their shirt, or an itching or pain in their body. Just listen! You will find out their dilemma.

No matter what, DO NOT PANIC! It puts your kid in a very hard spot. It is like the end of the world for them.

Relax, Think, Understand and then Act!

Above all... have the time of your lives!
