About Navratri Festival...

- By Poornima Poojary, 18th of August 2014, Festivals and Events, Views: 844

'Nava-ratri' simply means 'nine nights'. The 10th Day is called 'Vijaya Dashami', also known as Dussehra.

Dandiya

Navratri festival is celebrated for 9 days at a stretch in the beginning of winter. It is divided into groups of three days each to worship various forms of the Supreme Goddess.

On the first three days, Goddess Durga, a powerful force is worshiped in order to wipe out all our impurities and flaws.

The next three days, Goddess Laxmi, the giver of infinite spiritual wealth is worshiped and people seek her blessings for success throughout the year.

The final set of three days is spent in worshiping the mother of wisdom, Goddess Saraswati.

Many people go on fasting for 9 days. Throughout this festival, you will find that people are usually well dressed and play dandiya (a dance form using short sticks) during the night. The aura generated during the entire 9 days is simply magnetic, zestful and magical!

So, if you are new to India, and happen to be around during this festival, take maximum advantage of it! You will be delighted by the charisma of Navratri!
