5 India Events / Festivals you should not miss!

- By Poornima Poojary, 17th of August 2015, Festivals and Events, Views: 834
India comes alive during celebration of events and festivals. Dig into a few more and see what suits your type or simply go for the one you thought was not meant for you. Warning: You may be surprised!

1. Independence Day:
  • If you are in India on the 15th of August, put it in your itinerary to visit New Delhi, the capital of India to watch the grand processions. The celebrations are even grander with air force shows, army and military parades and heartwarming acts put together by kids from various schools across New Delhi.
  • The Wagha Boder which separates India from Pakistan at Amritsar, Punjab, also see the light of Independence with opening up of the gates and some amazing parades from both the countries, since Pakistan celebrates its Independence on the 14th of August.

2. Rann Utsav: A celebration of culture and radiance begins in winter, mostly by November or December each year and goes on for a good 3 months!
  • Rann Utsav is celebrated on the White Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, which is also known as the White Desert. This is not a desert of white sand as you may imagine, but pure white salt! It is an open desert of salt as far as your eyes can wander.
  • Each year during winter, a tent city is set up here with proper arrangements of luxury tents, great food, cultural programs, camel rides, and so on.
  • Local artisans and artisans from the neighbouring state of Rajasthan gather here to display and sell their hand made products. It is surely a thrill to watch the riot of colours by the white desert!
  • There are numerous other places to visit and explore around Kutch and soak in the amazing aura of Gujarat!
  • This year, Rann Utsav begins on November 9th 2015 and goes on until February 21st 2016.

3. Pushkar Fair:
  • This is a 10 day camel and livestock fair held in the town of Pushkar, Rajasthan mostly in October or November each year beginning on the full moon day with a camel race.
  • Other than buying and selling of livestock, there is plenty for locals and tourists to look forward to. Be it exhibitions and sale of fabrics, handicrafts, jewellery, textiles etc. or competitions such as longest mustache, 'matka phod', bridal competition, music and dance, the ambiance is filled with joy and cheer throughout the five days of fun and fair.
  • This year, Pushkar Fair begins on November 15th 2015 and goes on until November 25th 2015.

4. Maha Kumbh Mela: The story of the Maha Kumbh Mela is of mythological interest.
  • It is said that a few drops of the jar full of holy nectar (Amrut) fell from the heavens during the clash over it between the Gods and Demons.
  • The drops fell on 4 spots namely, Haridwar, Allahabad, Nashik and Ujjain.
  • Thus the Kumbh Mela is held in one of these 4 locations every 3 years and after a long wait of 12 years on each location.
  • Scores of pilgrims and holy men flock the venue and take a dip in the holy waters to cleanse their souls. It is a blissful sight for tourists, photographers and documentary film makers to capture this amazing mystical ambiance and get a chance to speak to the holy men and understand the significance of this religious carnival in their own words.
  • This year, the Maha Kumbh Mela is being observed between July 14th and September 25th, 2015 at Nashik, Maharashtra.

5. Sunburn Festival: Come year end and everybody is headed to Goa, the hotspot of India amongst locals and foreigners alike! To add to the excitement, Sunburn Music Festival is held at Vagator in North Goa starting December 27th until 30th each year. It is all about living, loving and dancing your heart out! This is the place to be if you want to experience the music of living!
